"Discouraged"

I'm officially "on the shelf". I could not work out at all today. I tried to ride but lasted 5 minutes. I got in to see the doctor who gave me a prescription for Naproxen an inflammatory, and a referral for physiotherapy. I will follow that up tomorrow. Right now I am very discouraged.

I suppose it's not a wonder that this shit happens. I figure that on my last ride I made over 15000 turns of the pedals, and the 35km run that started my problems amounted to more than 16000 steps with each foot.

I will try to get in a good swim tomorrow and hopefully that works ok. I may be doing a lot more of it for a while.

I wish to dedicate day 90 to my friend Paul Peltier a guy who will do anything for a friend!

And finally a note to self...

"Try Not! Do or do not....there is no try!" Yoda, Jedi Master

love peter

I wasn't kidding! You can make an old broken down knee somewhat better with NSAIDS (be careful with that Naproxen, it will rot your gut) and physiotherapy, but you will never fix it. The only way to do what you want to do with it and not have it get worse while you're doing it, is to properly support it while you're trying to do it. Being on the shelf will not be good for you mentally or physically, and will only fix the problem for the time you are on the shelf. Now its time you learned I may make things up but when I speak I damn SERIOUS. Get the name of a good sports medicine specialist or a physiatrist, get a referral, beg for a very quick appointment - explain to people what you've been through, what your dream is, and INSIST they help you achieve it! Now stop whining, and don't you dare lay down and say die now after what you've accomplished! (unless you want to) You have a right to this dream and getting there means training, not shelving. DO NOT let one old knee set you back - you have another one, and two hips and two ankles, and if you insist on training without supporting your knee you might fuck them up too. I will not visit you in the nursing home!
Holy cow, I'm sounding very mean this morning - I didn't mean it, I will visit you, on my way home from shopping with Sally and Roo.

Peter, Andy has a custom made knee brace that he had made when he tore his ACL a couple of years ago. Even though he has had the ligament surgically repaired, he still has to wear the brace for any sports. It is a little cumbersome but quite light and very supportive. I think this is what Cory is recommending. If I remember correctly they cost around $1700, some of which you may be able to recoup from your insurance. Andy could probably give you more info about the comfort level and flexibility of the thing. I could probably bring it to Teresa's on Sat if you want to see what it is like. love, mary
